Breaking News: Eros Cinema, Mumbai’s Iconic Venue, Set to Reopen as an IMAX Screen Featuring Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter on January 26, Managed by PVR Inox
In July 2023, there are reports about Mumbai’s Eros Cinema would soon reopen with a new avatar, featuring an IMAX screen. Speculations arose that the theatre would commence operations with the release of Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom on December 21, 2023. Later, there were discussions about the theatre potentially opening in either January or February 2024. It has now been revealed that Eros Cinema IMAX, managed by PVR Inox, will be unveiled to moviegoers on Republic Day, Friday, January 26. The inaugural film to be screened at this iconic theatre is Fighter, starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, a thrilling aerial action film that released in cinemas today.
At 9:29 pm on January 24, Preetham Daniel, VP Sales, India and South East Asia, IMAX Corporation, shared the news on his X account, stating, “One of the ICONIC cinemas in India is the EROS theatre in Mumbai. PVRINOX will open an IMAX at this iconic cinema on 26th Jan. Republic Day opening was the best date to open! (sic)”
Situated in close proximity to Mumbai’s Churchgate railway station, Eros Cinema is well-connected to the rest of the city. Formerly a single screen, it ceased operations in 2017 due to poor ticket sales and competition from multiplexes. In 2018, reports emerged that it would reopen as a 300-seater cinema hall on the first floor, replacing the balcony, with a department store on the ground floor. The original Eros cinema had a capacity of 1204 seats. Notably, a portion of the popular song ‘Tum Jo Aaye Zindagi Mein’ from Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010), featuring Ajay Devgn and Kangana Ranaut, was shot in Eros cinema.
In April 2023, rumors circulated that Eros Cinema, the iconic single-screen cinema hall located in Mumbai’s Churchgate area, would be demolished, causing a stir among Mumbaikars. The Art Deco structure, established in 1938, is a landmark building of the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had to clarify that the heritage building was not being pulled down, addressing the concerns surrounding its potential demolition.
