Netflix Experiences Rapid Growth with 100K New Subscribers within 48 Hours After Addressing Password Sharing

Following Netflix’s recent measures to curb password sharing, the streaming giant witnessed a surge of nearly 100,000 daily sign-ups within a span of just two days. Market research firm Antenna reported that Netflix experienced its four highest days of user acquisition since alerting subscribers in the US about its crackdown on May 23. The average daily sign-ups during this period reached 73,000, marking a significant 102% increase compared to the previous 60-day average.

While the crackdown on password sharing led to an increase in cancellations, the ratio of sign-ups to cancellations since May 23 rose by 25.6% compared to the preceding 60-day period, as stated in the report.

Netflix introduced its crackdown on password sharing last month, indicating that accounts are intended for use within a single household. Additional members using the service outside the household would incur an additional cost of $7.99 per month. Netflix Premium subscribers with 4K streaming have the option to add up to two extra members at an additional cost, while Netflix UK charges £4.99 per month for each extra member.

However, the option to add extra members is not currently available for the cheapest plans (Basic or Standard with Ads) costing $9.99 and $6.99 per month, respectively. Netflix had previously conducted a paid password-sharing experiment in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain in February.
