Oscars 2024: Karan Johar’s RARPK, Nandita Das’ Zwigato, Sudipto Sen’s The Kerala Story, and Gadar 2 Compete for India’s Official Entry
After the success of SS Rajamouli’s “RRR” and Guneet Monga’s “The Elephant Whisperers” at the 2023 Oscars, India is gearing up to select its official entry for the 2024 Academy Awards. With a number of high-quality films released in recent months, India has a strong pool of contenders to choose from.
According to media reports, the Oscar committee has begun screening films in Chennai, and “The Kerala Story,” “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” and “Zwigato” are among the films in contention. According to a source, the success of RRR and The Elephant Whisperers at the Oscars has given Indian filmmakers a “new confidence” to explore a wide range of commercial, regional, and serious cinema.
A 17-member jury headed by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli is expected to announce India’s official entry for the 2024 Oscars next week, after receiving over 22 submissions from across the country. Other films submitted to the Film Federation of India for Oscar selection include Anant Mahadevan’s The Storyteller (Hindi), Music School (Hindi), Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway (Hindi), 12th Fail (Hindi), Viduthalai Part 1 (Tamil), Ghoomer (Hindi), and Dasara (Telugu).
Gadar 2 has also applied for consideration, but its fee is pending. The list may also include Vaalvi (Marathi), Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose (Hindi), and Baap Lyok (Marathi). We have received their applications, but we are waiting for the fees.
The selection committee began screening films yesterday and will continue for a week. With a large pool of films to watch, an announcement on India’s official entry for the 2024 Oscars is expected next week. So, now the process of screening has started, it is interesting to see which film will make out in the final selection which was be sent across the Oscars 24.
